Flight on N663UA, a 23 year-old Boeing 767-300ER delivered in 1993 to United from Sao Paulo GRU to Houston George Bush International IAH.
Despite its age, the plane has been completely refurbished with the 777-type overhead bins and panels, new seats and IFE.
My final destination was Amsterdam. Due to the high season (December) and that I bought the ticket 6 days before, a direct flight from São Paulo to Amsterdam with KLM or with a stopover in a European capital was too expensive. In this case I will be flying from Sao Paulo to Houston. I will stay at IAH for nearly 11 hours and will fly later to Amsterdam. Total time: 29 hours and 35 minutes.
Of course, you need to have time to spare or love flying to do this (i.e. going via the legs instead of the hypotenuse), but it was way cheaper, and, as you will see in the next video, it wasn't that bad in the end...
Actually the original routing was through Chicago O’Hare, but due to a potential snowstorm that could have disrupted my trip, I preferred to change the route to fly via Houston. I also checked that IAH has a Centurion lounge, which is shown in detail in this video. The trip started with a “mandatory" stop at the Star Alliance Lounge at GRU
To have access to this lounge you either have to be a Star Alliance Gold member or an American Express (I guess) Platinum member or hold a Priority Pass Card.
Despite I was still able to find a very good fare, there were no window seats available for this first flight (I checked until the last minute on United’s website).
As many other airlines, United has created a unique safety announcement to attract the attention. I'm not a particular fan of these announcements, especially when you fly frequently, but some of them are really creative.
In the end this was a red-eye flight and there was not much to see outside, so it wasn't that bad to have a aisle seat. Initially I had a middle seat, but was able to change it later.
I liked United's IFE. I would only improve the music selection.
The dinner was good and the good point was that they were offering complimentary wine (La Clave). The last time that I flew United was in 2014 and they were charging USD 7.99 for a 187 ml bottle (check that flight by clicking on the link) https://youtu.be/tNZbqdidYDo
This flight will take 10 hours approximately.
With a 2-3-2 configuration, the 767 has the best comfort ratio with 86% of the seats next to a window or an aisle.
I had a long layover of 11 hours. I would have gone to visit Houston, but some people at the airport and at some internet forums said that besides shopping malls and high buildings there was nothing particularly interesting. Visiting the NASA required many hours and I didn’t have that much time.
